Optimize Your Weight Loss Plan by Adding Weight Lifting

Posted on | September 24, 2009 | 3 Comments

You may think that it’s counter-intuitive to life weights while trying to lose weight. Aren’t you trying to get rid of body mass, not add to it? And you’re not trying to bulk up and get big muscles, you just want that belly fat to disappear. What would weight lifting possibly do for you?
The truth is that lifting weights can do a world of good for you for a variety of reasons. First of all, we all have a resting metabolic rate that burns calories when we’re just sitting. Muscle cells have a hight calorie burning rate than fat cells. So, for each new muscle cell you build, you’ll be burning more calories even when you’re not working out!
Hight Reps, Light Weights
Since you’re not trying to bulk up, don’t focus too much on the amount of weights you’re lifting. You don’t want them to be too light. But you also want to be able to do a lot of repetitions. I recommend trying 3 sets of 10-15 repetitions each. After 2 weeks, try increasing the weight a bit. You only need to lift weights two or three times a week, alternating with your cardio workouts.
Who needs a gym?
One myth is that you absolutely need a gym to lift weights. Well, how do you lift weights with out any actual weights? The answer is too use your own body weight as resistance training. Stick with the basics: push-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups. Look around the house and find safe ways to lift weights. Maybe a gallon of water will work.
A special note to all the women out there: weight lifting will not make you look bulky or manly. Stick to the basics and you’ll be toning your muscles in a way that makes you look and feel great.

If You Hate Sit-Ups, Try These 3 Powerful Exercises to Burn Belly Fat

Posted on | August 10, 2009 | No Comments

I hate sit-ups. And I hate having belly fat. I thought I used to have a problem. Luckily, I found out that you can get rid of belly fat without doing a single sit-up! Sit-ups strengthen our abdominal muscles, but they don’t really do much to burn fat. To do that we need to do aerobic exercises to get our heart rates up. Read on for three simple yet powerful exercises that can help you trim your belly fat.
Exercise 1: Jumping Rope Isn’t Just for Boxers
Just like Rocky got in shape by jumping rope, you can too! You can find a jump rope pretty easily at most sporting goods stores, or even at garage sales or online. There are so many different moves and techniques you can try to keep things interesting. Search on Google for jump rope moves and you will find a ton  of fun exercises to keep your feet moving, your heart pumping, and even help you with your rhythm.
Exercise 2: Burpees to Burn Belly Fat
What’s a burpee you ask? No, it’s not some kind of bodily function. It’s a simple exercise that adds in a little strength training to your aerobic workout. Start standing up and then flex your knees to squat and touch your palms to the ground. Now, push your legs back and lower your chest so you’re in the low push-up position. Next, return to the previous position by bringing your legs forward and be squatting with palms down on the ground again. Lastly, jump straight up in the air and raise your hands to the sky. Now repeat.
Burpees can be a little hard to describe and understand without visual aids. Go to youtube.com and search for videos teaching you how to do a burpee. One of my favorite videos is by GymJunkies, though there are many more. Practice it a few times till you get the hang of it, and  then try doing 3 sets of 10 in a row. Increase it if you’re not getting a good enough workout. The 100 Burpee timed challenge is a great way to track your progress as well as burn lots of fat!
Exercise 3: Dance the Night (or Day) away
Is this really an exercise? I’m not sure if everyone would call this fun activity exercise, but as long as you’re active and getting your heart rate up, it doesn’t matter what you call it – you’re burning fat! I could make endless lists of different dances, but every person has their own personal preferences. I enjoy hip-hop dance, as well as partner dances like salsa and swing. In my opinion, the most fun kind of dancing is just boogeying in your own room at home with the music volume turned up. Hairbrush microphone optional.
Remember, sit-ups aren’t evil, they just aren’t for everyone (like me!). More important than strengthening your abdominal muscles is to get some good aerobic exercise like the three examples above. Enjoy jumping, doing burpees, and dancing your belly fat away!
